BFTO "open" practical (air) pistol competition

Next shoot: June (?) 2006
  • No other details yet.

How to find us:
Site entrance (streetmap.co.uk) - zoom out to see route from M3J3.
Schematic   - schematic map showing route to BFTO.

Notes for visitors:
  • the NRSA no longer charges for vehicle parking on site
  • range surface is rough ( see images ) grass - do not expect to have an easy time finding dropped cartridges/ magazines!
  • visitors welcome, but be responsible and safe - or else!
Other links:
http://www.bfto.org.uk/ - official club website. Exclusively field target orientated.
www.practicalpistoluk.com - dedicated message board for PP shooters. I guess the reason for my BBS handle ('werewolf') is now horribly clear...
What the hell is this ' Practical Pistol ' anyway?

BFTO mini shoot

Next shoot: undecided
We have decided to hold an internal competition every month - mainly for the practice, but also so we have something different to shoot at (as well as test new gear etc.)! Visitors are welcome, but don't take it too seriously...it's all just a bit of fun.

In general the format will be:

  • no entry fee (£1.50 range fee)
  • no prizes
  • any division
  • 4 stages
  • 40-60 rounds
  • Starting at ~10:00
  • Ending at lunchtime

Antisocial Behaviour Bill

This Bill affects many groups including TAC shooters. This is what the Bill means to TAC shooters:
  • After the 20th Jan you will not be able to sell, buy or transfer a TAC airgun.
  • All types of TAC airgun are covered by the Bill (pistol and rifle, all calibres).
  • If you own a TAC airgun you may: (a) hand it in to the Police - it will get destroyed and you won't get any compensation or (b) apply for a Firearms Certificate (FAC or 'ticket'). You must do one of these things before 30th April.
  • If you still posses a FAC airgun after the cut-off date (30th April) you could be in big trouble. It is now a section 5 firearm (i.e. a prohibited weapon, like a machine gun), and thus could get you 5 years in prison. It is possible you could still hand it in to the Police.

Assuming you choose to get an FAC, this is what to do (highly simplified):

  1. Get the relevant forms from the web or your local police station.
  2. Get two referees to each fill out a referee form and send it in, fill out the FAC application yourself and send it off with four passport type photos and £50. Don't forget to sign one photo and get your referees to endorse one photo each.
  3. You will then get a home visit from the police who will check serial numbers of airguns, check house security etc.
  4. Assuming all goes well you will be granted your FAC a few weeks later.

Some other details:

  • You cannot have an FAC if you have been barred from owning firearms (e.g. for involvement in violent crime). A mental illness may also prevent you from getting a FAC.
  • The airguns will have to be stored securely, typically this will mean a firearm rated safe. You may also need to upgrade your home security.
  • If any of your guns get stolen you will have to prove all reasonable precautions were taken (expect hard questions asked with the benefit of hindsight). You may loose your FAC, and thus any other TAC guns.
  • Your TAC gun is only classed 'section 1' (equivalent to semi auto rifles, shotguns) as long as you own it. Any sale or transfer changes it to 'section 5' (equivalent to a machine gun). Thus you can't buy any more and you can't sell them (it's possible a registered firearms dealer could sell your guns abroad).

I’ve got my FAC, now what?

  • Put in for a variation, i.e. the authority to buy more (real’) guns. To do this you will need to belong to a Home Office Approved gun club (you can apply when you are a full member, typically after a 3-6 month probationary period) – this is because you need to show ‘good reason’ for any additional firearms. Typically you would be able to apply for an additional 4-5 firearms.
